Backwashing Wedge Wire Candle Filter
High-Efficiency Self-Cleaning Filtration Solution
Self-cleaning wedge wire candle filters designed for continuous filtration, high solids retention, and long service life in industrial processes.
Structure & Working Principle
The wedge wire candle filter consists of a cylindrical V-wire screen element mounted vertically inside the housing. During filtration, liquid flows from outside to inside (or inside to outside, depending on design), retaining solids on the screen surface.
When differential pressure reaches a preset value, the system initiates backwashing. Clean filtrate reverses flow direction, dislodging accumulated particles and flushing them out through the discharge port—without interrupting filtration.
Typical Applications
- Chemical processing
- Petrochemical & refinery filtration
- Water & wastewater treatment

How the Backwashing Candle Filter Works
The filter consists of wedge wire candle elements installed in a pressure vessel.
During operation, solids accumulate on the surface and are periodically removedby reverse flow backwashing without interrupting filtration.
Why Choose Our Backwashing Candle Filter
Automatic Backwashing
Integrated reverse-flow cleaning removes trapped solids without stopping operation.
Wedge Wire Precision Slots
V-shaped profile prevents clogging and ensures consistent filtration accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions
The slot size of wedge wire candle filter depends on the particle size to be retained, fluid viscosity, and required flow rate.
Common slot sizes range from 25 μm to 500 μm
A general rule is to select a slot size 30–50% smaller than the smallest particle you need to remove
For viscous fluids or high solids loading, a larger slot size helps reduce pressure drop
Our engineers can recommend an optimal slot size based on your process data.
Yes. The filter is designed for continuous operation.
Filtration and backwashing can occur without stopping the system
Automatic or differential-pressure–triggered backwashing ensures stable flow
Ideal for 24/7 industrial processes where downtime is unacceptable
Yes. Wedge wire candle filters are well suited for high-temperature applications.
Standard materials include SS304, SS316L, duplex, and high-alloy steels
Operating temperatures typically up to 400–500°C, depending on material and sealing design
No polymer media, so performance remains stable at elevated temperatures
Backwashing frequency depends on solids concentration, slot size, and operating conditions.
Can be triggered by time interval or pressure differential
Typical backwash cycles range from minutes to several hours
The efficient wedge wire structure minimizes clogging and reduces cleaning frequency
